THE STACKS · HUMAN
Asha Vasiliev
Seven years in Demeter's refinery and they sent me home with a pilot light behind my ribs. Most days it sits low. When it catches, my hair goes first, then my hands, and for a breath I am only the shadow it throws — and then I come back, and Ostra is still at the table, counting.
When the flame took her on the stairwell last winter I did not run. I sat on the step below and said her name until the shadow had a face again, and she came down beside me smelling of burnt sugar and asked me why I was crying.
Asha came home from Demeter's refinery with a fire inside her. It burns her down to a shadow, and she comes back. Every time, so far. — L.
